1. THE SPECIAL AIR SERVICE
The SAS, an elite unit of the British Army, is trained to perform special operations in all parts of
the world, often far from logistical support. When working behind enemy lines in small groups, self-help
is the name of the game. Thanks to magnificent training from survival instructor Colonel John N. "Lofty" Wiseman
(SAS, Retd.), which forms the core of this site, many have lived to tell the tale.
The survival kit contained herein has been tested in training and operations. Whether cut off on a misty
hillside, lost in jungle or stranded in the desert, the problems of basic survival are the same for SAS
troopers and civilians. SAS troopers tend not to advertise their presence, but through circumstance you
may not be able to do so either. This site does its best to pass on some basic tips to ensure you walk
away alive and well.
Colonel Wiseman is the acclaimed author of
"The SAS Survival Handbook", which should be a part of the equipment in every wilderness
traveller's backpack. Based on his 26 years of teaching all members of "The Regiment" how to cope with
disaster, this taste of his sage advice will hopefully prompt you to pick it up in your local bookstore
and conclude that it represents a very worthwhile investment. To see an illustration of what you're looking

The Regiment's motto, "Who dares wins" is so well-known as to need no comment. If I were asked to offer an
additional motto, it would be, "Who prepares survives".
In addition to the practical advice contained on this site, you will find advice for survival in an age
when personal privacy has become an near-unknown condition. Most former SAS men do not advertise their
connection to The Regiment because of the possibility of reprisal from past operations.
You may have your own reasons for wishing to remain a private individual and you will find good advice here
on how to do so. In addition, some hints and tips on combatting snooping, and ways to frustrate government's
naked lust to share in any good fortune you may have had will teach you how to defend against attack.
