3. SURVIVAL KIT CONTENTS
FISH HOOKS, LINE AND WEIGHTS
Pick a selection of different hooks in a small packet and add some split lead weights. Note that small hooks will catch
small and large fish, but large hooks will not catch small fish. Include all the line possible; you can also catch birds
with a baited hook and line attached to a stake hammered into the ground.
COMPASS
A luminous button compass is best, but make sure you can read it correctly without confusion before buying it. The
liquid-filled kind is best; ensure it doesn't leak, is bubble-free and fully serviceable. Chack that the needle swings
freely on its pivot and watch that it doesn't rust.
BETA LIGHT
Although only the size of a small coin, this light-emitting crystal is ideal for map-reading at night and can even be
used as a fishing lure. Expensive, but virtually everlasting.
SNARE WIRE
Brass wire is best, about 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90 cms). Snare wire can solve many survival challenges as well as snaring
small animals.
FLEXIBLE SAW
A good flexible saw can cut down quite large trees. Usually supplied with large rings at each end to use as handles;
remove them and use wooden toggles when required. Keep filmed with grease to prevent rust and breakage.
